Presentation: Building a Custom Aluminum Sailboat to Cruise to the Arctic

Ever thought about what it would be like to build a custom cruising boat that met all your criteria? In this presentation longtime international cruising sailors and award-winning videographers, Paul and Sheryl Shard, share the process of having their custom aluminum 49-foot cruising sailboat built in the Netherlands for their upcoming high latitude adventures! Using video footage from the Distant Shores YouTube Channel as well as still images, music and live narration, Paul and Sheryl will take you to Holland and show how their design was created, explain what to look for in a designer and boat yard as well as showing the procedure of how aluminum is formed into a rugged lightweight sailboat built to withstand extreme elements. Presentation: How to Sail Your Boat Across an Ocean
Have you ever dreamed of sailing across an ocean? Longtime cruising sailors, authors and hosts of the Distant Shores sailing TV series and YouTube channel, Paul and Sheryl Shard, have made 9 ocean crossings including two as participants of the World Cruising Club’s ARC and ARC+ rallies. In this info-packed seminar they discuss how to prepare your boat and yourself for offshore sailing, the pros and cons of rallies and options for getting experience at sea.

TV presenters and international cruising sailors, Sheryl and Paul Shard, will be conducting two complimentary 2-hour presentations .
Presentation #1: Building an Aluminum Sailboat
Time: 10:00 a.m. to 12 noon
This seminar is designed for anyone planning to buy a cruising sailboat and wanting to learn more about aluminum sailboats. The seminar will begin with a tour of the Shards' new Enksail Orion 49, Distant Shores IV, now in the final stages of build. The tour will be conducted by the Shards and Enksail Yachts, General Manager, Ronald van Enkhuizen. The method of build will be shown and explained, systems and features of the boat will be discussed.
The Shards, who have been cruising internationally for 34 years, will then do a presentation about the build history of Distant Shores IV and discuss their reasons for going with an aluminum sailboat, what customizations they have made, the process of finding a builder, choosing options and working with a boat builder.

Presentation #2: Preparing for Long-distance Cruising
Time: 1:00 pm. to 3:00 p.m.
If you are considering doing some long-distance cruising, this seminar is designed for you. For over 30 years, Paul and Sheryl have been helping both new and experienced sailors around the world prepare for long-term and long-distance cruising. In this information-packed seminar using footage from their popular TV and YouTube videos and beautiful images from their global adventures, they will discuss what features make a good cruising boat, how to equip it, how to build your skills and confidence as a sailor, how to build trust with your crew, budgeting for long-term cruising, communications at sea, provisioning, route-planning and more.
