British Virgin Islands - Sailing
If you are dreaming of a winter getaway for tropical sailing, the British Virgin Islands might just be the perfect choice!
We have made numerous cruises to the British Virgins. Gorgeous waters with safe protected sailing.
Would you like to sail with us in the BVI?
In 2019 we will return to these lovely islands with Distant Shores III. We're offering the opportunity to come and explore the islands on the new boat. Check out the page here on Sail Away Weeks
They are a safe and easy place for novices to get a taste of Caribbean Cruising - Sheryl and I first tried the Caribbean Lifestyle back in 1985 on a bareboat, and have been back here many times, in 1992, 2007, 2008, 2009 and 2013-2014 & 2015.
Although the BVI can be busy and some anchorages crowded in season, there are still quite a few quiet spots if you get off the beaten path. Here is the view of the anchorage in Statia Sound. There is now a bouyed channel through to this area near the Bitter End Yacht Club in North Sound Virgin Gorda.
Best Diving in the British Virgins
The Indians near Norman Island is our favourite dive so far in the British Virgin Islands. Here are some scenes on the reef here... It is a calm and lovely day today with winds 10-15...
Hiking BVI
Some of the islands have nice hiking. One of our favourite trails is over the hill up behind the Bitter End Yacht Club. There is Saba Rock Bar and Restaurant and Statia Sound in the background.More good walks on Peter Island. The Sunset Loop is a 5 mile walk from the harbour near the resort out to amazing views south over the Caribbean. Big Hills! Here is one of the anchorages at Peter Island off the beach. In the background is the Sir Francis Drake Channel which protects the sailing area.
These islands are very well set up for sailors, who I think account for most of the tourism here. Relaxing and friendly...
If you are planning to "bareboat" here we made a program on a Lagoon 380 bareboat cat in 2007 as part of the Distant Shores Season Five.
Sailing is amazing since you are protected by the Sir Francis Drake Channel so even with perky Caribbean "Christmas winds" or Northern Fronts you still have a nice place to sail.

Many charter companies are based out of Roadtown Tortola and you can pick up a boat there, sail less than 1 hour and be in an amazing tropical paradise. Check out our Newsletters from the cruise in 2013
The BVI is also good for diving, many of the nice snorkelling reefs are well protected so beginners can get into it. Here is an album of an amazing encounter with Turtles we were filming for Season 9 of Distant Shores.
